Portuguese footwear industry invests 140 million euros to improve sustainability
A footwear industry sustainability initiative launched by the Portuguese Association of Footwear, Accessories and Leather Products Manufacturers (Apiccaps) and the Portuguese Centre for Footwear Technology (CTCP) says that over the next three years, the Portuguese footwear industry will invest 140 million euros to provide "sustainable solutions" for the country's footwear industry. More than 50 percent of the project will be funded by A
More than 50 percent of the project's funding will be raised by more than 100 companies and research centers, including Apiccaps and CTCP, with the remainder provided by the Portuguese government and the European Commission.
While the development of "new" biomaterials, energy efficiency and water conservation, and automated production are listed as areas for investment exploration, Apiccaps still believes that leather is "the best material on the market.
Mr. Gonçalves, head of marketing at the Portuguese Footwear Association, commented, "We use leather to produce durable footwear and consumers don't have to change the footwear they buy very often." But in the fashion world, the discussion of leather was trivialized. In recent years, global meat consumption has been steadily increasing, so for the market to provide there is more leather. The leather industry uses cowhide, a by-product of the food industry, as a raw material to process into leather, and it is an industry that recycles and creates a circular economy. apiccaps also revealed that they are currently working with around 20 experts to develop a leather alternative, which aims to provide an additional option for those vegan consumers, but Mr. Gonçalves stressed that "This material cannot be called sustainable".
